High Blood Pressure: Here's why you should include cardamom in your diet

High Blood Pressure aka hypertension is one of the common ailments across the world and unfortunately, many of us do not understand that they are suffering from it as it is an insidious condition and the symptoms of it rarely show up. And that's why it is vital for everyone to regularly check BP levels. For the unversed, high BP is when the pressure of blood against the arteries is always higher than the normal. The health condition can lead to other life-threatening health issues such as heart attack, stroke, kidney, brain and eye issues among others. Simple dietary changes and workout routine, aside from medications, can bring down elevated levels of BP to normal. For the uninitiated, normal blood pressure levels should be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. High blood pressure is considered when the levels are higher than 140/90mmHg.

Coming to dietary tweaks, one should include a commonly found and used a spice called cardamom aka elaichi. The antioxidant and diuretic properties of cardamom help to bring down BP levels to normal. These two contents help high BP patients to pass more urine and thus higher levels of of sodium are passed out of the body. This, in turn, helps the blood vessels to relax and pass blood smoothly.

A Dietician told on how cardamom aid to control high BP, "Cardamom is known as the "Queen of Spices", the most important benefit of cardamom is that it has antioxidant properties which promote heart health." She added, "Cardamom also contains fiber, the nutrient that can help lower cholesterol levels and enhance heart health. Because of these properties, the spice also can lower blood pressure levels and this benefits heart health as well."

As per a study, which was conducted in the year 2009, researchers gave around 3 grams of cardamom for 12 weeks and they saw how it helped to improve high BP and related heart-related issues as well. Cardamom is very versatile, one can add them in teas, milk, milkshakes and desserts. Also, it can be used as a mouth freshener. Aside from cardamom, one should also include potassium-rich food items as they help to reduce the effects of sodium. Food items such as white beans, sweet potatoes, spinach, beets, tomato, bananas, avocados, yogurt, salmon and coconut water among others.

Also, high BP patients should do at least 150 minutes (two hours and 30 minutes) of moderate to high-intensity physical activities such as cycling, brisk walking, jogging, swimming, yoga and body weight workout among others.
