Here's why you need to STOP throwing the orange peels

One of the best things about winters is oranges. Bright sun and juicy oranges make for the best combination. This pulpy fruit is famous worldwide and has many health benefits.
But it’s the orange peels that get thrown away until you dry them and put them on your face, which many people do. But can you also consume orange peels? Does it have any health benefits? We tell you all:

What’s in the peel?
Orange is rich in multiple vitamins and its peel too has several nutrients like Vitamin C, fibre and plant compounds like polyphenols. All these nutrients can be beneficial for the digestive system and heart health. The polyphenols in the orange peel can also help manage and control diabetes and some chronic health conditions like obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.
The list of benefits doesn’t end here, orange peel also contains a lot of Vitamin B6, calcium, pro-vitamin A and folate.

Surprising fact
1 tablespoon of orange peel (6 grams) provides you with 14 per cent of the daily value of Vitamin C needed by your body. This is nearly three times more than the inner fruit. The peel has about four times more fibre than the fruit.

Helpful for weight loss
As the peel is high in fibre, it induces a feeling of satiety. The vitamin C in it promotes the burning of fat. You can make herbal tea by using the orange peel.

The right way to consume orange peels
As the orange peel is not often consumed, your body might take time to get used to it. You can bite into the peel or just take some small chunks at a time. You can also cut small pieces of it and add it to your salads, soups or even smoothies. You can also dry the peels and make a powder of it and later add it to your cakes, muffins or yoghurt. But do not forget to wash the peels thoroughly.

Keep in mind
The peel of orange might contain some pesticide residue. That is why you must not forget to wash it thoroughly before consuming. The peel is hard and high in fibre and thus it might be difficult for some to swallow and digest it. You can even consult your doctor before adding it to your daily diet.

It can used as a face mask too adding some turmeric powder, rice flour, little milk to make a paste and scrub all over your face and neck. Leave it on for 15 minutes, wash it with luke warm water.
