Coronavirus risk: What should pregnant women know about COVID-19

The coronavirus has spread to 70 countries around the globe as the death toll has crossed 3,000 globally and close to 80,000 people have been infected worldwide. Mainland China has reported the maximum number of deaths (2,912 deaths) from the fatal virus, followed by Iran which has confirmed 66 deaths with 1,501 positive cases.

With two new confirmed cases being reported in India on Monday, the total number of positive coronavirus cases have touched 5 in Delhi. 3 of them have been discharged from the hospital and were in quarantine in their homes. Due to the lack of any definite cure, people worldwide are on an edge and frantically finding ways to safeguard themselves against the deadly virus.

In addition to a slew of WhatsApp forwards (including curing coronavirus with the help of garlic and prevention through surgical masks) and social media posts, there is rampant misinformation about the virus both online and offline. This is why it is absolutely normal for people to get worried about their family.

According to CDC, “The virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly by close contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets. However, in limited recent case series of infants born to mothers with COVID-19 published in the peer-reviewed literature, none of the infants have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.”
