Study claims football fans experience a dangerous levels of stress

If you're a football fan, read this
Football is undoubtedly one of the most loved and popular games around the world. This sport is enjoyed immensely by people across age groups and one can easily get a rough idea about their level of craziness during the Football World Cup or EPL (English Premier League) season. If you have ever got stuck between a Manchester United and Liverpool fan, you will know about the level of dedication and loyalty towards their team.

But a recent study has revealed that this devotion of football fans towards the game might put them at a greater risk of heart attacks due to high-stress levels.

The study
As per the study carried out by the researchers of the Oxford University, devoted football players experience intense levels of stress while watching their favourite team during a tournament, which can put them at the risk of a heart attack.

The researchers conducted this study during the 2014 Football World Cup when Brazil faced a historic defeat by Germany in the semi-final. For the study, the researchers tested the saliva of Brazilian fans and found that the level of cortisol (stress-related hormones) spiked to a dangerous level during the 7-1 home defeat in the semi-final.

The sudden rise in the stress level can put unnecessary stress on the heart, which can increase your blood pressure and can lead to a heart attack.

Surprisingly, the researchers found no difference in the stress level between men and women.

The reason
The real reason behind the rise in the stress level is due to the intense involvement of fans in the game. They develop a strong sense of being one with their team, which causes a great impact on their psychology. The ups and downs during a match can also lead to high blood pressure, while prolonged exposure is linked to immune system damage.

The bottom line
Your devotion towards a game is normal, but it is important to understand that it is 'just a game' and winning and losing is a part of the game. Do not let the feeling of defeat fluster you as it can be dangerous for your health. Try to stay calm in all the situations.
