Various Reasons/ Causes For Itching

Hypothyroidism- Thyroid is a small gland in our neck, which plays a vital role in the way we store and burn our energy, i.e., indirectly it is responsible for you being obese too ! If it doesn't make enough hormone, you could feel tired, weak, achy, and foggy-headed. You could also get dry, itchy skin. It's more common in women who might notice changes in their monthly cycle or problems getting pregnant. You might be able to manage it with artificial hormones and other treatments.

Pregnancy- When a woman is pregnant, her body stretches to give space for the baby to grow. This skin stretching can cause itching, for which one can wear lose clothes, don't bathe in hot waters, use moisturisers. If the itching is really bad, especially on your hands or feet, it could be a more serious condition called cholestasis. It's caused by a buildup of bile salts from your liver. Your doctor will watch you and your baby closely.

Some forms of Cancer can cause itching-Polycythemia vera- a type of blood cancer, may cause itching, especially after a warm bath or shower. You also may get tired or dizzy or have trouble breathing. Pancreatic cancer can make you itchy if a tumor blocks bile ducts and causes a buildup that leaks into the skin. Lymphoma, a type of cancer, where skin is red and scaly and itches a lot. Best is to consult your doctor to rule out the basic cause of it all.

After-effects of  cancer treatment- When one has to have chemotherapy or radiation therapy or stem cell therapy or targeted therapy  to treat cancer. In such cases, it will be better to use mild soaps, avoid perfumes, detergents, use luke warm water to bathe/ shower, and use moisturiser after your bath. If the itching is unbearable, best to consult your doctor for the same.

Stroke- During stroke blood supply to some part of the brain is affected. If one's cranial nerves are affected, then one's throat, jaw or ear may itch. If one's brain tissues are damaged, then the facial nerves are affected, leading to itching around cheek and nose.

Multiple Sclerosis- This disease slowly damages the nervous system and can cause severe bouts of pain, burning, itching anywhere in the body. The disease can affect cranial nerves or brain tissues, which can then lead to itching in the face, throat, jaw or ear for a long time. Your doctor can treat by prescribing appropriate medication for it.

Diabetes- One of the early signs of diabetes is thirst and itching of the skin. If you suffer from poor circulation,  your legs will be very itching. You may use cooler and shorter showers, mild soaps and moisturising lotion.

Growth of tumours on or near the spinal cord or near the brain stem cell can cause what is known as neuropathic itching, as some of your nerves are affected. Your doctor can help to ease itching by suggesting some suitable remedies.

Shingles - You get shingles if you had chickenpox. It is a painful rash and the virus at times kills cells in a part of your sensory ganglia- a part of the brain. This can cause pain and itching for a long time.

Pinched Nerve  -  When we over work any part of our body, or had a fall, then an infection might lead to swelling that presses on the nerve. With rest and anti-inflammatory medications, one may find relief, but if the problem persists, then your doctor will suggest the appropriate treatment for the same.

Allergic reaction to medication- At times, when one has anti-fungal, antibiotics, antimalarial drugs, one may have itching and rashes. This is all the more so, when you're allergic to any medication, also when new medication you may have started. Then, please ask your doctor, what medicine you'ld take or stop.

Anaemia- when one is anaemic, one has less red blood cells, which them them weak and tired. And for some, it can lead to itching too. Your doctor can tell you what foods are best to absorb iron and what foods affect your absorption of the same.

Dialysis- In case you're having dialysis, then too much or too little dialysis can affect the imbalance in your blood and cause itching. Also it drains out extra water from your body, so your body can dry and cause itching. Sometimes causes too much phosphorus in your blood, which can bind to calcium and cause itching. Check with your doctor if you notice this symptom.

OCD/ mental health- Obsessive-compulsive disorder- when it makes you prone to frequent hand-washing or bathing can dry out, damage, and irritate your skin. Other mental conditions might make it harder to stop scratching, which makes you even more itchy.Your doctor can treat you for either problem when you consult him/ her.
