SOME THINGS WHICH CAN HELP DURING AND AFTER BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
1)ACUPUNCTURE --Research shows it boosts your immune system and releases natural pain killers. It may also curb side-effects of cancer treatment like nausea, pain, fatigue and anxiety. It is always better to inform your doctor if you're going to have this treatment, as in some cases, there can be side-effects, so it isn't recommended.
2) Massage- some hospitals recommend massage as it lessens pain. It can also relax before lumpectomy, mastectomy, or breast reconstruction. After surgery, a specialist giving massage may help lessen swelling. The doctor may mention " lymph drainage technique".
3) Yoga- slows your heart rate, blood pressure and brain waves. Women who go for yoga classes during radiation treatment say they feel less tired and stressed. If you do regularly, yoga can also lessen inflammation. Choose a good and experienced yoga instructor and share your medical history with that person, so they can help you with correct exercises.
4) Tai Chi combines slow, graceful body movements with breathing and meditation. Relaxing the mind this way, helps to strengthen the body. It may also help those women who practice it to lessen their inflammation and feel better both mentally and physically.
5) Art therapy- Whatever may be the form of art that one can practice, it helps to make the person feel happy, less tensed, as it gives the person a form to express their fear. Art is shown to ease anxiety and depression and help the self-esteem of the person, as one always feels happy with what they've created.
6) Horses are natural therapists- as the mirror the body language of people around them and make the person feel more aware of their feelings. Learning to care for and ride a horse builds confidence.
7) Music therapy- music helps one to connect to one's feelings during treatment. Studies have shown that when you've a trained music therapist, it can help to lessen your pain, improves one's state of mind, and reduces worry for people with breast cancer.
8) Penning your thoughts- when one pens down their fears, feelings, it helps one to feel a bit more relaxed, boosts one's moods, without any fear, just write down whatever comes to your mind, after all it is your personal diary.
9) Support groups- when you join a support group, then you're sure that you aren't the only one going through such pain. Others can give you suggestion what works best for them, or from where one can buy a wig for free ! As many in the group may be more experienced in treatment, especially if you've just started the treatment, then one can learn a lot from the group, as to how handle different stages of treatment. Just talking and mingling with such like-minded people makes you less tense, as they know what you're going through, as even your family or your best friend may not know what exactly it is to go through the various therapies and surgeries.
To be frank, I learnt a lot from the various support groups I joined after my thyroid cancer surgery, it showed me that I too can survive like so many others before me had done.
My best wishes and prayers to all those who are going to read this for a healthy and happy year ahead.
