Salmonella Found in Common Kitchen Spices

Undercooked meat is often the culprit in cases of food poisoning, but the spices you flavour the meat with could also make you sick.
A forthcoming report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that common spices,  are contaminated with salmonella at twice the rate of all other imported foods. Out of 20,000 food shipments, seven percent of spices were contaminated with salmonella.
The biggest offenders on the list of contaminated spices are common ones sold in grocery stores across the United States:
  • coriander
  • oregano
  • basil
  • sesame seeds
  • curry powder
  • cumin
  • black pepper
Of these spices, coriander had the highest contamination rate with 15 percent of its shipments containing salmonella. Twelve percent of oregano and basil shipments were tainted.
Salmonella is the most common food-borne bacteria, infecting an estimated 1.2 million people a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The young, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are at a greater risk of dying from salmonella poisoning.
Children under the age of 5 are the most likely to become infected with salmonella, the CDC states.
