8 Health Benefits of the Nigella Plant

The Nigella plant is a common household spice used to add a surprising crispness to a variety of pastries. However, not many people are aware that these small, dark grains provide significant health benefits due to their natural medicinal properties. Here are 8 benefits of consuming Nigella that you shouldn't miss. We've also included a brief explanation of what Nigella is.

What is Nigella?
 nigella
The Nigella plant is a frequent sight in the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia. In our country, we can spot five Nigella species in the wild. However, the cultivated plant from which we collect the Nigella, is not as prevalent as a wild plant. In ancient times, the situation was different, as evident from its mention in the book of Isaiah. Its medical properties have been known since time immemorial, as mentioned in the Talmud. The sedge has been a food source and a basis for oil production in different cultures in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa for centuries. It is also a healthy nutritional component containing several active compounds, the most prominent of which is thymoquinone. This same compound is responsible for most of the goat's health benefits, as per various researchers in the field.

Please be aware that the recommended daily intake of Nigella is between 1–3 grams per day. However, if you consume the extracted oil, the recommended intake changes to 250–1000 milligrams per day.

Eight health benefits of consuming Nigella

1. Rich in antioxidants
Nigella is rich in natural antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and prevent oxidative damage to the body's cells. A 2013 study found that Nigella contains natural compounds such as thymoquinone, carvacrol, and ethanol tea, which make it highly recommended for maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases.

2. Nigella consumption can help prevent ulcers.
A stomach ulcer is a painful wound inside the stomach caused by damage to the protective lining. This condition can cause discomfort and disrupt daily life. Fortunately, there is a natural solution that can help prevent ulcers from forming. Nigella seeds have been shown to restore the lining of the stomach and prevent ulcers from developing. In fact, a study on rats found that fennel seeds were almost as effective as common medications used to treat ulcers. Additionally, research conducted in Turkey showed that ash can protect the stomach lining from alcohol damage and prevent the development of ulcers.

3. Reduces levels of cholesterol
Excess cholesterol in the blood is a major health concern in the 21st century. While the body needs cholesterol in certain amounts, high levels can lead to heart diseases. However, a 2016 study found that consuming shavings can help reduce general cholesterol levels, as well as LDL cholesterol (the "bad cholesterol") and triglycerides. The study also showed that using Nigella oil had a greater impact than using Nigella seeds alone.

4. Helps eradicate bacteria
Bacterial infections can lead to a variety of severe health issues, ranging from minor ear infections to complicated pneumonia. Fortunately, Nigella can help prevent the onset of diseases by eliminating harmful bacteria before they cause harm. Researchers have discovered that fennel possesses medicinal properties that can halt the spread of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as demonstrated in test-tube experiments conducted at Cairo University in Egypt and the University of Medical Sciences in Pakistan.

5. Fights inflammation
Inflammations are a natural response of our body's immune system to protect us from injuries and infections. However, chronic inflammations can be harmful and may lead to various diseases. Studies have shown that Nigella contains a high amount of antioxidants and can effectively reduce inflammation. In a study conducted in 2016, around 42 individuals with arthritis consumed 1,000 milligrams of Nigella daily for eight weeks, resulting in a significant decrease in oxidative and inflammatory stress in their bodies.

6. Boosts healthy liver function
It's crucial to understand the significance of the liver's proper functioning for our overall well-being. This internal organ plays a vital role in detoxification, processing nutrients, and producing essential compounds. Nigella is known to possess medicinal properties that protect the liver from damages, as supported by various studies. In 2008, researchers found that rats who consumed Nigella experienced liver protection and averted infections.

7. Helps regulation of sugar-levels in the blood
Research has shown that Nigella consumption can help regulate and decrease high blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can lead to severe nerve disorders, decreased vision, and slower recovery from wounds and bruises if left untreated. A study conducted at King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia showed positive results in 94 subjects who consumed Nigella daily for three months.

8. Helps to fight cancer
As previously mentioned, Nigella is a great source of antioxidants that can help prevent serious diseases, including cancer. Multiple studies have shown that Nigella has the ability to decrease the risk of cancer and stop the spread of cancer cells. For instance, a study conducted at Jackson National University found that an extract of Nigella could disable the activity of cancerous breast cells. Additionally, research from 2011 revealed that Nigella and their compounds could be effective against various other types of cancer such as lung, pancreatic, cervical, prostate, skin, and colon cancer.
