Cardiologists Spread Awareness On Aortic Stenosis, Its Risks And Preventive Measures

Cardiologists unite ahead of World Heart Day 2024 to raise awareness on aortic stenosis, a cardiovascular issue which has a mortality rate of 50% within two years if left untreated.

Cardiovascular diseases continue to increase among Indians and ahead of World Heart Day 2024, it is imperative that the importance of awareness regarding the disease is heightened. It is important that people know all about the improved medical treatments to promote heart health nationwide. This year's World Heart Day theme is, "Use Heart for Action," brings together leading healthcare professionals to discuss effective strategies and treatment options aimed at raising awareness and enhancing heart health across the population.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), a group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels, are the leading causes of mortality worldwide. An important fact to note, valvular heart disease is one of the significant contributors to global morbidity and mortality. It also causes physical disability and deteriorates the quality of life. Aortic stenosis (AS), the most common valvular heart disease, occurs when the valve between the lower left heart chamber and the aorta narrows and does not open fully. This results in restricted blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. The risk of AS is known to increase with age. It affects almost 1 per cent to 2 per cent of people under the age of 65 and almost 29 per cent of those over age 65.In India, the estimated increase in the elderly population from nearly 138 to 194 million between 2021 and 2031 raises concerns about AS. If left untreated, AS has a mortality rate of 50% within two years, which is higher than for many other conditions.

Why Is Early Diagnosis Important For Aortic Stenosis? Doctors Explain

A cardiologist emphasized the importance of early diagnosis by saying, "For high-risk patients, such as those with a history of heart disease, regular screening is essential. By identifying the condition in its early stages, we can manage and monitor it before it becomes life-threatening. TAVI treatment has revolutionized the treatment landscape, offering a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery."

During the discussion, a Dr. stated, "People often do not get diagnosed with aortic stenosis because the disease frequently lacks significant signs in its early stages, presenting only functional symptoms like fatigue that are often attributed to aging. However, as more noticeable symptoms emerge, quality of life can be severely hindered. It is crucial for both patients and healthcare systems to recognize these signals early."

Importance Of Preventive Approach

Highlighting the need for a preventive approach, a Dr. stated, "We are now seeing more younger patients presenting with aortic stenosis, partly due to lifestyle factors and improved diagnostic methods. It is important to raise awareness not only about the risks but also to encourage regular heart screenings among the general population, especially for those with a family history of heart disease. This has been transformative, giving patients hope for a healthy life with minimal recovery time."
