This simple blood test can detect cancer

In terms of medical innovation, the battle against colorectal cancer has advanced significantly. With the discovery of a novel blood test that can identify this common type of cancer, there is now hope for earlier detection and better results. Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, this cutting-edge screening tool's specifics and how it might affect cancer prevention and detection.

Colorectal cancer, a disease on the rise, has met its match in a new blood test through a clinical trial. Developed by Guardant Health, this blood-based screening test boasts an impressive detection rate of 83% for colorectal cancer. The test, administered through a simple blood draw, operates by identifying circulating tumour DNA signals within the bloodstream.

Despite recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to commence regular colorectal cancer screening at age 45, a substantial portion of eligible adults fail to undergo screening as advised.

Presently, effective screening avenues include stool tests and colonoscopies. However, the advent of the blood test could mitigate barriers to screening, potentially bolstering compliance rates and facilitating earlier detection. This development aligns with efforts to address the rising incidence of colorectal cancer, particularly among younger demographics.

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer, encompassing malignancies originating in the colon or rectum, poses a significant health threat. The large intestine, comprising the colon and rectum, plays a vital role in the digestive system, as per the American Cancer Society. The colon, a muscular tube approximately 5 feet long, traverses various sections, including the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon.

What are the early signs of colorectal cancer?

Early signs of colon cancer are crucial for early detection and diagnosis, as they can save a potential life. Colon cancer targets the colon and rectum, making it one of the most common types of cancer and the second leading cause of death related to cancer worldwide. Key symptoms to watch out for include changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhoea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool, rectal bleeding, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, and chronic fatigue.

 What are some prevention techniques?

Prevention and screening can reduce the risk of colon cancer becoming life-threatening. Changes in diet, staying active, avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption, and regular check-ups are essential. The colon passes waste and absorbs water, food, and nutrients, while the rectum stores waste until it is passed to the anus.
