Chew leaves of the Insulin plant to control blood sugar, keep diabetes in check

Diabetes is one disease present in almost every household across the country. According to statistics, India has over 80 million people suffering from the disease, a staggering number which is expected to rise by over 134 million by 2045. Doctors believe that nearly 60 per cent of people remain undiagnosed.

 insulin plant

Commonly known as the Insulin plant, Costus igenus belongs to the Costaceae family and its consumption is said to lower blood sugar levels, thereby keeping diabetes in check.

Hence, it is very important to take care of your blood sugar levels  as the disease reduces body immunity and makes you vulnerable to many other ailments as well.
One of the natural ways to keep blood sugar levels balanced is chewing costus igenus, commonly known as the Insulin plant. The plant does not contain insulin, nor does it help produce it, yet it can convert sugar into glycogen , which promotes metabolism.
The plant holds great significance in Ayurveda and helps control sugar levels. Even though it tastes sour, the insulin plant, also known as crepe ginger, can be beneficial for chronic diabetics.

Health benefits

A few health benefits of the insulin plant are:

  • Converts sugar into glycogen: The natural chemical of the plant converts the blood sugar into glycogen, which helps in regulating and balance it.
  • Can cure colds and coughs: Since those suffering from diabetes suffer from low immunity, they are prone to falling sick every time the weather changes. The insulin plant also helps in curing ailments like coughs, colds, infections, lung issues, asthma, uterus contractions, and even diarrhoea and constipation.
  • Rich in corsolic acid: The leaves of insulin plants are rich in corsolic acid. This chemical, when ingested, enhances the secretion of insulin from the pancreas and triggers high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

How to consume

To consume the leaves of the insulin plant, there are two ways. One is to simply pluck the leaves, and wash and chew them. Secondly, you can grind the leaves into a paste and take a teaspoon mixed with a glass of water and drink twice a day.
With regular consumption, you will notice an improvement in sugar levels.

The plant can be grown at home easily.
