News> Health News Diabetes: Are you testing your blood glucose the right way? Here are some mistakes that you must look out for

The condition characterized by unhealthy levels of blood glucose in the body is termed ad diabetes. Depending on the cause, this condition can be of three types - type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. When suffering from diabetes, it is essential to keep regular track of blood sugar levels to ensure health and prevent the risk of unhealthy spikes in the same. However, as much as it's necessary to carry out the testing process, it is also important to do it the right way. Laboratory aided testing of blood sugar levels might not be feasible or affordable for daily tracking of blood glucose levels. This is where the wonderful home testing kits kick in.

Blood sugar testing mistakes

Understanding the appropriate way of using home testing kits is important to ensure accurate readings. Here are some common mistakes that people make while testing their blood sugar levels at home:

  1. Using old testing strips: One of the most common mistakes that people make while testing is using old testing strips. In fact, some people are not even aware that the strips come with an expiration date. Old strips must not be used because they can provide inaccurate readings which can be misleading.
  2. Not being careful of the time of testing: Testing too early or too late can have a significant difference in the blood sugar levels. Although it is recommended to test according to the instructions provided by the doctor, experts suggest testing two hours after a meal for accurate results.
  3. Having an inconsistent testing routine: Keeping a track of blood glucose levels implies unsaid consistency. As much as it's important to test the blood sugar levels daily, it is also essential to keep it consistent and timely. For instance, a person who tests their blood sugar levels every day at 8 AM will be able to track their health better as compared to a person who tests their blood sugar levels at 8 AM the first day and at 12 PM on the second. This consistency cannot be achieved without a well-regulated lifestyle.
  4. Having dirty hands: Dirt, salt, sugar, or other particles on the hand's surface can tamper with the results while testing. To get accurate results, it is important to wash the hands and ensure that they are thoroughly clean.
  5. Choosing the testing kit mindlessly: When picking out a testing kit, it is important to consider all the aspects of one's lifestyle, health, and more. Different testing kits come with different features that can serve a variety of requirements. For instance, a person who is always on the move might require a small-sized, portable kit as compared to someone who stays at home. This is why it's important to consult a healthcare professional and choose the best among the options available.
