We all have experienced moments of great stress and anxiety during the course of our lives. It is something that is so prevalent in our society that the need to address it cannot be overlooked at any cost. While most of us are conscious about the triggering factors that lead to such anxiety, many of us still underestimate the role of different foods and drinks that aggravate the problem. According to expert nutritionists, certain foods and drinks can have an adverse effect on our blood sugar levels, setting off a whirlpool of intense emotion and leading to anxiety.

That being said, here are some of the foods and drinks you must avoid during anxiety.

Cakes and cookies

Anxiety has a lot to do with our blood sugar levels. Therefore, foods high in sugar can lead to an increase in blood sugar levels, causing anxiety in people. Instead of engaging in sugary foods like cakes, cookies, pastries and others, you must switch to fresh fruits that possess natural sugar content.

Akin to sweetened foods, sugary drinks can also spike up your blood sugar levels, hence leading to anxiety. Many fruit juices also contain a lot of sugar without enough fibre in it. Low-fibre diet often leads to indigestion and results in an increase in blood sugar.

While smoothies are a great source of energy and nutrition, sometimes, if it lacks fruits and vegetables with proteins, then it may either cause a spike or a fall in your blood sugar levels. That said, it can increase your chances of developing feelings of anxiety and nervousness.

According to a research, anxiety is more prone in people who drink beverages that contain caffeine, such as coffee, tea and energy drinks. Caffeine activates adenosine receptors in the peripheral and central nervous systems, which triggers high levels of anxiety in people.

Alcohol can have an adverse effect on our blood sugar levels and can also result in insomnia in people. Besides that it can result in dehydration and severe hangovers, triggering the feeling of anxiety and stress.
