We all love to sip on a hot cup of adrak
wali chai, especially during the chilly winter mornings. Full of
flavour, adrak/ ginger is famous for its medicinal properties and has been a
popular Ayurvedic herb to treat several conditions.
From
soothing a sore throat to flushing out toxins from our body, adrak is a
magical ingredient we all swear by. But you will be surprised to know
that this powerful herb can also lead to several side effects when
consumed excessively.
Read ahead to know the side effects of consuming too much ginger.
Can lead to diarrhoea
As per experts, ginger accelerates the
passage of food and stool through the intestines, which can cause
unrest, restlessness and even diarrhoea.
Not safe for pregnant women
Consuming ginger beyond the prescribed
quantity (1500 mg) per day increases the chances of miscarriage. Thus,
to be on a safer side, experts suggest avoiding too much ginger during
pregnancy and have it only after consulting your doctor.
Can lead to bleeding
Ginger has anti-platelet properties. Too much ginger can lead to bleeding, especially when consumed with clove or garlic.
Ginger
interferes with blood thickening, so if you have trouble with blood
clotting or excess bleeding, ginger can make that even worse.
Can lead to heartburn
There is enough evidence to prove ginger
could reduce acid reflux. But there are even more pieces of evidence
that show that ginger can cause heartburn and irritation. Ginger has
gingerols that can irritate the stomach into producing more acid.
Can lower blood pressure
Multiple studies have found that ginger can
reduce blood pressure, which is a good thing in patients with high blood
pressure. But people who have normal or low blood pressure might feel
lightheaded or weak after having ginger tea.
Prevents hair regrowth
A Chinese study found the effect ginger has
on hair growth. It found that if you are trying to grow your hair long
or struggling with baldness, you might want to avoid consuming ginger.
Gingerol can prevent hair regrowth.
