Low carb diet (similar to keto) can help boost sperm count as well as quality in obese men: Study

Keto diet has gained immense popularity over the past few years. People who have tried it claim that diet has not just helped them lose weight but has also benefited them in many other ways.

Talking about other benefits of keto diet, apart from weight loss, a new study has found that the diet can increase the sperm quality and count in obese men.

The Study

The case study observed two obese men who lost weight by following a diet similar to keto diet and found that there was a significant improvement in their sperm count and quality. The study was done by Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil and was presented at the 2020 European and Internal Obesity Congress.

Case 1

In the first case, the participant lost around 27 kilos in three months after following the keto diet. His body fat percentage dropped from 42 per cent to 34 per cent.

The sperm quality improved by nearly 100 per cent based on the percentage of motile sperm in the test sample. The testosterone levels also increased more than double.

Case 2

The second participant lost around 9 kilos in three months and his body fat percentage dropped from 26 per cent to 21 per cent. The sperm quality also improved but the sperm count increased drastically with over 100 million more sperm tested in the final test sample. But surprisingly the testosterone levels of the patient decreased slightly.

The diet plan followed by the participants

The participants followed a dieting plan called Pronokal, which is a highly-studied commercial weight-loss method launched in Spain in 2004. The diet plan differs from traditional keto. It is not only a low carb diet (less than 50 grams a day), but also limits the calories to 800 per day.

Though the study was a very small scale one to draw any concrete conclusion, there are existing evidences that support the notion that a low carb diet can benefit sexual health and increased intake of fat can support healthy sperm levels.

Older studies have also linked higher levels of dietary fat intake to increased risk of testosterone.

Verdict: You don't always need a strict diet to improve sexual health

Extremely restrictive diets can have side effects, especially in the long run. But the good news is that one doesn't have to follow extremely tough diets to improve sexual health.

Sexual health can also be improved by making healthy dietary changes in your regular diet.

One of the most followed diets, Mediterranean has also been linked with improved erectile dysfunction.

Not just this, studies have also found that eating processed foods is linked with poor sperm count. While eating more fish and vegetables has been linked with better sperm count, increased sex drive and overall better sexual function.
