India’s Unique Wound Dressing That Stops Bleeding in Minutes Gets FDA Nod!
In a first, an
Indian-make haemostatic dressing that stops haemorrhage from actively
bleeding vessels within minutes of administering through natural
clotting has been approved by US FDA (Federal Drugs Administration). Extensively used by the Indian Armed forces, Border Security Force,
National Security Guard, and other Paramilitary forces as part of their
defence kit, Axiostat is an instant first-aid dressing which has earned
the rare distinction of being the first Indian wound care product to
receive FDA clearance on Wednesday.
A flagship patented product of Bengaluru-based Axio Biosolutions,
what makes Axiostat unlike any other haemostatic bandage is its
incorporation of chitosan, a saccharine biopolymer obtained from the
hard outer skeleton of shellfish that can stop bleeding in less than
four minutes.
This feature helps in saving the lives of wounded soldiers posted at
the border and conflict zones, where even a minute is crucial to their
survival when compared to traditional compression methods lasting up to
30 minutes. The dressing can be easily removed through the thorough
washing of wound with saline water. Besides the military, Axiostat is also used by hospitals, ambulance
services, industries and relief aid and has prevented fatality owing to
traumatic injuries in battlefields, hospitals, and road accidents across
the world.
“This is a validation of the performance, safety and efficacy of
Axiostat in bleeding control. This is a ‘made in India’ product for the
global market,” said Bioengineer Leo Mavely, who is the founder and CEO
of Axio Biosolutions,
Founded in 2008 by Mavely to develop a biopolymer-based wound care
products, Axiostat is currently being put to use in 12 other countries,
besides India.
