Boost Your Immune System with Garlic Infused Honey Boost Your Immune System with Garlic Infused Honey

You rely on your immune system all year long to help ward off illness by preventing germs from getting into your body and killing the ones that do. It’s not always enough to stop you from noticing the effects of a viral or bacterial onslaught, but your immune system is constantly working to make you feel better as soon as possible. People with stronger immune systems get sick less often and when they do succumb, it is for a shorter duration.

On the other hand, if your immune system is compromised, you are much more likely to become ill when you encounter a contagious bug. Certain medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, lower a body’s immune response. If you need chemo, there is no way around this. But there is a lot that people both healthy and immuno-compromised can do to boost their immune response so that everyday bugs are a lot less likely to take them down.

One such immune-strengthening natural remedy is garlic and honey. Both of these ingredients have a powerful effect on wellness individually, and together they can make you feel invincible. (But don’t go licking any doorknobs to test this.) To understand why it works, we will first look at garlic and honey separately. Then we’ll share the recipe for garlic-infused honey so that you can boost your immune system daily.

Garlic

Garlic has been shown in studies to help a body fight infection. Eating some every day is thought to lower your risk of catching a cold by 63% and shorten the duration of colds you do catch by up to 70%. The likely mechanism behind this is the allicin content of garlic (onions also have it). Allicin can kill bacteria. It helps to lower cholesterol, reduce blood clotting, and even slow the growth of cancer cells.
This spicy seasoning also boasts a lot of nutrition. Eat garlic daily to get healthy amounts of vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese, and selenium, as well as a good dose of fiber. You get the most benefit from raw garlic, as cooking it starts to break down many of the nutrients, including allicin.
If raw garlic is too powerful in taste for you, it’s still worthwhile to eat it cooked. In this case, some studies suggest that crushing the garlic and letting it sit for 10 minutes before cooking can prevent the loss of allicin.

Raw honey

For the purpose of strengthening your immune system, we recommend raw honey rather than processed honey products. Raw honey has strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties that strengthen the immune response, whereas processed honey is filtered and heated to an extent that removes these benefits.
Raw honey also features minerals such as potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Vitamins in honey include thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and niacin. Eating raw honey each day can improve your energy levels and clarity of mind, as well as reduce total cholesterol. And even though it tastes wonderfully sweet, honey typically scores lower on the glycemic index than white sugar.
One caveat in terms of raw honey is that it carries a small risk of botulism. This doesn’t pose a significant health risk to healthy adults, but it can be quite dangerous to young children. For that reason, pregnant women should avoid raw honey. Children under the age of one year should also skip it.

How to Make Honey Infused with Garlic

It really couldn’t be simpler to make this super immune booster, but there are a few things to remember. First, gather 3-4 whole heads of garlic, one cup of raw honey, and a glass jar with a lid.
Directions
  1. Break down the heads of garlic and peel each individual clove.
  2. With the side of a large knife, crush the cloves enough to break them open but not pulverize them.
  3. Add the garlic cloves to the jar and carefully pour in the honey.
  4. Stir to release any air bubbles and make sure that they honey has fully coated the garlic.
  5. Place the lid tightly on the jar.
  6. Leave the mixture to infuse for 2-3 days at room temperature.
At this point you may strain the honey into a new container to make consumption easier. However, if you leave the garlic to continue infusing, your mixture will become stronger over time. Depending on your tastes, feel free to add extra herbs to the mix.

Potential Additions

Thyme is a tasty potential addition to garlic-infused honey that also has a positive effect on the immune system. A member of the mint family, thyme has antibacterial properties and has been used for complaints as diverse as acne and coughing. It also contains a good amount of vitamins C and A, both of which help with recovery from illness.
Ginger contains powerful antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The less common angelica root has been found to modulate the immune system  and work wonders on respiratory problems and cold symptoms. And elderberries are fantastic for symptoms of the flu, sinus pain, or chronic fatigue because of their antioxidant quercetin.

Take a spoonful of your garlic-infused honey mixture every day to boost immunity. Hopefully this habit will prevent cold or the flu from taking hold, even when your neighbor at work is coughing all over the place, or your kids don’t bother washing their hands after school. If you don’t like the taste, you can also down the mixture only when you’re feeling ill in order to shorten the duration of symptoms.

You can simply take your garlic-infused honey straight on a spoon, but it goes quite nicely in other foods, too. For example, you can drizzle it on oatmeal, spread it on toast, or use it in salad dressings. It makes a nice topping on stir fries as well. When you start getting really creative with your infused honey, you may find you like a different variety for every day of the week. Go crazy, because as long as your base includes raw honey and garlic, you can’t go wrong.
