Being a scout or guide shields you from anxiety and mood disorders

Being a guide or a scout could help you face the future better.

As well as knowing how to tie knots, read a map, put up a tent and start a fire, a new study reveals that being in the scouts or guides during childhood also prepares your mind for the future.

Researchers at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow led by Chris Dibben analyzed data from almost 10,000 people from the UK born in 1958. They discovered that those that had been in either the Boy Scouts or the Girl Guides as children (28% of the sample) were less likely (by as much as 15%) to suffer mental health issues, such as anxiety or mood disorders at the age of 50.

The researchers, whose results are published in Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, also found that there was no mental health benefit for those who had been involved in other types of voluntary groups during their formative years.
