WHY BLOOD SUGAR SWINGS AFTER SOME FOODS? Remedies for the same
Caffeine
Your blood sugar can rise after you have even black coffee and black tea with no calories -- thanks to the caffeine. Each person with diabetes reacts to foods and drinks differently, so it's best to keep track of your own responses. Ironically, other compounds in coffee may help prevent type 2 diabetes in healthy people.Sugar-Free Foods
Sugar-free foods can still raise your sugar levels as they have plenty of carbs from starches. Check the total carbohydrates on the Nutrition Facts label before you dig in. Read the nutrition facts for sugar alcohols such as sorbitol and xylitol. They add sweetness with fewer carbs than sugar (sucrose), but they may still have enough to boost your levels.Chinese Food
When you gobble up a plate of sesame beef or sweet and sour chicken, it isn't just the white rice that can cause a problem. High-fat foods can make your blood sugar stay up for longer. The same is true for pizza, French fries, and other fried foods that have a lot of carbs and fat. Check your blood sugar about 2 hours after you eat to know how a food affects you.A Bad Cold or Flu
Your blood sugar rises as your body works to fight off an illness. Drink water and other fluids to stay hydrated. Call your doctor if you've had diarrhea and or vomiting for more than 2 hours or if you've been sick for 2 days and aren't getting better. Be aware that some medicines, such as antibiotics and the decongestants that can clear your sinuses, can affect your blood sugar, by making it raise !Job Stress
Too much stress at work takes a toll. When you're under stress, your body releases hormones that can make your blood sugar rise. It's more common for people with type 2 diabetes. Learn to relax with deep breathing and exercise. Also, try to change the things that are stressing you out, if that's possible.Best still, like what my son says, never take into ears anything bad, as that stresses you, try to forget and keep your mind busy with happier things to remember !Bread Or Bagels?
Why bread is better than bagels? Bagels are packed with carbohydrates -- more than a slice of bread. They have more calories, too. So if you're craving one, go for a mini version.
Sports And Energy Drinks
They're made to help you replenish fluids quickly, but some of them have as much sugar as soda. Plain water is probably all you need for a moderate workout of less than an hour. A sports drink may be OK for longer, more intense exercise. Always check for the calories, carbs, and minerals in them and if they are safe for you.Dried Fruits
The dried versions will pack more carbohydrates in a smaller serving size. Just 2 tablespoons of raisins, dried cranberries, or dried cherries have the carbs of a small piece of fruit. Three dates give you 15 grams of them. Better to eat a fruit or better still have plain cucumber !Steroids and Diuretics
People take corticosteroids, such as prednisone, to treat rashes, arthritis, asthma, and many other conditions. But they can boost your blood sugar, and may even trigger diabetes in some people. Diuretics that help high blood pressure can do the same. Some antidepressants also raise or lower blood sugar.Medicines For Colds
Decongestants that have pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine can raise blood sugar as they also sometimes have a little sugar or alcohol in them. So look for products that skip those ingredients. Antihistamines don't cause a problem with blood sugars. Ask your pharmacist about the possible effects of over-the-counter meds before you buying.Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills that have estrogen can affect the insulin levels. But oral contraceptives are safe for women with diabetes. Some researchers suggest a combination pill with norgestimate and synthetic estrogen. They also says birth control shots and implants are safe for women with the condition, but it can affect your blood sugar levels.Flavored Yogurts
Plain yogurt is good for you than flavored ones, as they have more sugar from fruits and added sugars and the carbs from the fruits.
Remedies to control your blood sugar levels
Eat a diet rich in whole grains, those who eat vegetarian diet, especially with type 2 diabetes, ave better control, as the fibre in whole grains and beans take longer to digest, thus slows down the digestion of carbs, mostly helps to keep the sugar levels under control.
Good sleep
For most people after a good sleep at night, the sugar levels are low in the morning. For those, who tend to become hypoglycemic in the morning, it is better to have a small snack before retiring to bed.
Exercise
Those who are diabetic it is best to have a small snack before you go for any intense exercise, as your blood sugar is likely to drop low after exercise. So, best is to check your sugar level before, after you exercise, to judge what is best for you or take advise from your doctor.
High temperatures
When you're out in the Sun it is difficult to control your sugar level, so best be hydrated. So, for diabetics, it is safer to be in cooler places. Also, the heat can affect your glucose monitor, medications and test strips, it is safer to store them away from heat to get correct reading.
Sugar and Carbs
Sugar is as such bad for diabetics, but it isn't necessary that you've to give it up completely, if you're able to have total control on your carbs intake. If you're able to reduce your total carbs intake, then you can indulge in small portion of the dessert !
Glycemic index and your food choice
It is always best to know the glycemic index of various foods, so best to choose those foods that have low GI, so that you're able to keep control over your sugar levels.
