Measles vaccine kills cancer in landmark trial
The 50-year-old woman hailing from Minn. was
fighting Myeloma, bone cancer that impacts bone marrow.
Post the chemotherapy sessions and stem cell transplants the medical consultants at the Mayo Clinic inoculated the lady with 100 billion units of the measles virus, as part of a clinical experiment. This dose was large enough to inject 10 million people.
The cancer patient complained of a splitting headache after five minutes had gone into the hour-long procedure. She began to tremble and vomit after two hours with her body temperature recording 105 degrees.
The main researcher on the case, Stephen Russell said in a statement, "Thirty-six hours after the virus infusion was finished, she told me, 'Evan has started shrinking.'"
Post injecting only one dose of the measles virus, her tumour growths completely vanished over the next several weeks, completely curing her of cancer.
According to the clinic's statement, virotherapy - killing cancer with a virus that infects and destroys cancer cells but leaves normal tissues can prove effective against the deadly cancer multiple myeloma.
The researcher Russell stated that he and his team had engineered the virus to make it more accommodating for cancer treatment.
According to the lead researcher, the unprecedented trial highlighted two points that the medical researchers need to remember always: "No. 1, you need a really big dose and No. 2, the patient needs to not have an antibody to the virus."
Russell further stated, "What this all tells us is something we never knew before ? we never knew you could do this in people. It's a very important landmark because now we know it can happen. It's a game changer. And I think it will drive a development in the field."
