7 Great Tips That'll Help Keep Cataracts at Bay

As we grow older, the chances of getting a cataract increases dramatically. However, thankfully, there are many things we can do during our younger years that will decrease these chances. In the video below, you will find 7 tips that will help prevent a cataract from ever forming in your eyes.

A cataract is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye and blurs our vision, causing nearsightedness (myopia) and decreasing our ability to detect the colour blue. They can even cause blindness.

Although it is a problem usually experiences later in life, there are various ways you can prevent cataracts from forming. Learn these great tips-

1.   1)  Beware of medication side-effects- Protect the eyes from the potential side effects of certain medications. Psoriasis medication, for instance may cause cataracts when taken in large doses over a long period of time.

2.     2)  Keep your blood sugar under control- those suffering from diabetes should keep their blood sugar under control. This is because diabetics tend to develop cataracts faster and at an earlier age than other adults.

3.     3)  Wear sunglasses- protect your eyes from ultraviolet sun rays speed up the development of cataracts. Whenever you’re out in the sun, wear sunglasses.

4.    4)   Get plenty of antioxidants- studies have shown that antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C , E and beta carotene slow the development of cataracts,  so make so make the development of cataracts, so make sure you eat your carrots.

5.      5) Watch your fat intake- foods like butter, oils (except olive oil) and salt and increased fat consumption in general have been associated with a higher risk of developing cataracts. Therefore, you should limit the intake of such foods.

6.    6)   Feel the love for veggies- a diet rich in spinach, cruciferous vegetables ( like broccoli),  tomatoes, peppers, citrus fruits and melons will help prevent cataracts.

7.       7) Avoid exposure to heavy metals- cadmium, copper, lead, iron and nickel, as well as other heavy metals, should be avoided as they may increase cataract formation.

 

Cataracts that occur due to the aging process cannot be prevented as this process cannot be stopped, but they can be delayed and fought against, so that you may not have to deal with them  when you get older.
