Researchers believe this supplement can cut the risk of COVID-19
While
the coronavirus continues to devastate lives, scientists are looking
for new ways to control the deadly virus. In one of the recent studies
published in the journal PLOS Biology, researchers have identified a
popular supplement that may just cut your COVID risk significantly. Do
you want to take a guess? The popular sleep aid - melatonin.
The study
For
the study, scientists sifted through data from Cleveland Clinic's
COVID-19 registry. It was found that patients who took melatonin were 30
per cent less likely to test positive for COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2
virus. The risk of infection was even less, 52 per cent among the
African Americans. The data was based on age, race, smoking history and
various disease comorbidities.
Though the findings are positive, more research is needed to confirm the supplement's effect, say scientists. That is why doctors warn that one should not just started taking melatonin supplements without consulting their physician as random administering can lead to side effects.
Side effects of unmonitored melatonin
Some common side effects of consuming melatonin include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and more.
Healthy supplements to include
Other
supplements that can help boost your immunity and lower your risk of
COVID-19 infection include Vitamin D (do get yourself tested before
deciding the dose), zinc and Vitamin C.
