The 5-second self test is said to determine your risk of diabetes

Millions of people suffer from diabetes all over the world and closer home the situation is worse. With over 50 million people suffering from it in India, our nation is called the diabetes capital of the world. The condition isn't restricted to the adults alone but can impact a child as young as 6 months.

The condition though is more common in middle-aged people and understanding one's risk can help one to be proactive, get tested and ensure they receive the treatment as soon as they need it.

As per a new study, there is a small trick that can help determine your risk of type 2 diabetes and thus help you manage it better.

The trick

According to a study published by Annals of Medicine, the strength of your handgrip can be used as a quick and inexpensive way to identify your risk of type 2 diabetes. The researchers at the University of Bristol and Eastern Finland examined the handgrip strength of 778 people between the age of 60-72, who had no history of diabetes. All these people were asked to squeeze the handles of a handgrip dynamometer by using their dominant hand using maximum effort for five seconds.

The results

The results of the experiment found that the risk of type 2 diabetes was cut in half for every unit increase in handgrip strength. The handgrip has always been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes but researchers have not previously explored using this tool, which can be of major help in a patient's likelihood of developing the disease.

Another recent study conducted in June 2020 found that people with a higher value of handgrip strength had 27 per cent reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. Diminishing muscular strength can also be a sign of other ailments including cardiovascular disease and other disabilities.

Verdict

Handgrip assessment is simple, inexpensive and does not require expertise. The method can help identify the early risk of future type 2 diabetes.
