5 lifestyle changes to make if you have had a heart attack

As per World Health Organisation, around 17 million people die due to heart-related diseases every year globally. Out of these, 3 million people die of cardiovascular diseases including stroke and heart attacks.

Recent data shows that more young people are getting affected by incidences of heart attack in India.

Thankfully there is a lot that heart attack survivors can do to stop another episode from occurring.

​Get moving

Exercise plays an important role in restoring your health and energy after a heart attack. It helps by managing any anxious or depressed feelings and also enable better sleep. As per reports, one should aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Moderate activities can include brisk walking, playing badminton or tennis. You can also choose to do 75 minutes of intense physical activity in a week.

Moreover, two to three days of total body strength training is also important to recover, gain and maintain muscle mass.

It is important to find an activity that you like. This will help you in being consistent with your exercise routine. Strength training twice is week is linked to lower risk of heart disease, stronger bones, muscles and improved mental health.

Change your diet

Start eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes. Also include fish, lean protein and low-fat dairy foods in your diet.

Studies have shown that heart health improved when these foods replaced unhealthy food in your daily diet.

Say no to smoking

We all know smoking is injurious to health, even second-hand smoking. Smoking makes your blood stickier and prone to developing more clots, which can trigger another heart attack.

Learn to manage stress

We all know how stress can increase our blood pressure, which is not good for our heart. Thus, it's very important to find ways that can help you manage your stress and anxiety. Make a routine to do something you like every day. A consistent sleep schedule also helps in managing heart health.

​Learn about heart disease and your risk

It's always easy to deal with a problem when you know about it properly. Learning about what's good and not good for you is always the best approach to deal with any issue.
