Essential Foods For Type 2 Diabetics
Research shows that there are many natural foods which can help control blood sugar levels.
1) Almonds- Clinical trials have shown that restoring low magnesium significantly improves insulin response and reduces blood sugar levels. Almonds are one of the best source of magnesium in our diet.
2) Dark Chocolate- Current human studies suggest that cocoa helps to improve insulin sensitivity, particularly for diabetics. Your chocolate must be really dark though, typically shown on the label as 85% cocoa or more.
3) Coffee- Large studies have found that those who drink more coffee appear to have lower type 2 diabetes risk, ranging from 11- 40 %.
4) Apple cider vinegar- Research has shown that vinegar can reduce glucose uptake into the blood streams as much as 34 %. It seems to have an immediate impact, improving insulin sensitivity during a high-carb meal by 19-34%, and minimising any glucose or insulin spikes.
5) Resistant starch- Some studies have shown 33-50% improvement in insulin sensitivity after 4 weeks of consuming resistant starch. That is equal to what you would see if you lost around 10 % of your body weight.
6) Cinnamon- Certain compounds in cinnamon interfere with digestive enzymes, which show glucose absorption. One study found that cinnamon improves the effectiveness of insulin by more than 20 fold.
7) Green Tea- The main active ingredient in Green tea its polyphenols , which are thought to influence glucose metabolism. A review of 7 large studies found that Green tea drinkers had an 18 % lower risk of becoming diabetic.
8) Fenugreek ( methi)- A study on 25 type 2 diabetics found that 1 gm of fenugreek extract daily increased insulin sensitivity by 53%. Significant improvements to blood sugar control have also been seen in type 1 diabetics.
My cousin used to take 3 times a day, 1 tsp of fenugreek powder mixed with water before his meals, he said that his diabetics was totally under control ! Anyway, best to check and consult your physician before you do anything, though having fenugreek soaked overnight in water and having it early morning in empty stomach will not do you any harm.
