At the very first symptom of cold or fever, I peel and chop a medium size onion and place it in a small container in the room where I usually occupy. This makes sure, that I don't catch cold or fever.
Another good remedy for cold is in about 350 ml of water, wash and add 15 tulsi leaves, 1 " ginger finely chopped, 2 peppercorns crushed, simmer this water for about 8-10 minutes, strain, make 3 portions approximately, drink 1 portion when quite hot either plain or add 1 teaspoon of honey. One portion have in the afternoon/ evening, if you go to work, the last at night, each time, warm the solution and drink. Within 2 days, you'll find a lot of relief. In the left over residue of tulsi, ginger and pepper, you can add water to make tea, it will be nice spices, aromatic tea to soothe your throat !
Some more home remedies-
Garlic
Garlic is highly
rich in antibacterial and anti viral properties and can therefore offer a
powerful remedy from colds. It can strengthen the body’s immune system
and open up the congested respiratory passages. It can also expel the
toxins from the body.
Crush a garlic clove and mix it with two teaspoons of lemon juice, one
teaspoon honey and half teaspoon black pepper powder or red chilli
powder. Consume this preparation regularly till relief is attained. You
can also prepare a decoction of garlic cloves and honey and drink two to
three times a day for relief.
Honey
Honey can leave a
soothing effect on the irritated throat and also shorten the span of
colds. The enzymes and nutrients in honey can help kill bacteria and
viruses that are responsible for colds. Mix one teaspoon of lemon juice
and two teaspoons of honey. Consume this preparation every two hours for
curing cold and sore throat.
Spice Tea
Spice tea is one
of the best Ayurvedic formulations for common cold. Making this at home
is very easy. Just roast a quarter cup of coriander seeds along with one
and a half teaspoons of cumin seeds, same quantity of fennel seeds and
half a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds.
Grind them together dry and add one and a half teaspoon of this powder
to boiling water and simmer for a few minutes. Add two tablespoons of
milk. Wait till the mixture boils and strain it. You can drink this
spice tea hot two times a day till relief is attained.
Ginger
Ginger has strong
antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory characteristics and
therefore can be highly useful o treat common colds. You can consume
ginger either raw or in several other ways. Make a tea of ginger and add
lemon juice if you prefer. Drink any of your chosen preparations few
times a day to see a significant relief from colds.
Alternatively, make a paste of ginger, cloves and salt and take one and a
half teaspoon of the preparation two times a day. To cure running nose,
make a preparation mixing equal quantities of ginger powder, ghee and
jiggery. Take this mixture in the empty stomach in the morning.
Red Onion Syrup
Red onion syrup
is a powerful remedy for common colds. Prepare this syrup in your
kitchen the easy way. Slice red onions horizontally. Place one slice in a
bowl and add some honey over it. Then place another slice and repeat
the process till several layers. Place a lid over the bowl and leave the
set up over 12 to 15 hours.
When you open the bowl after this time, you will see thick watery syrup.
Consume one teaspoon of this syrup many times a day for curing sore
throat and the many symptoms of common colds.
