Obsessed Clicking Selfies- Can Be A Mental Disorder

Selfie, the most trending word so far. This word was so buzzworthy that in 2013 it got added to Oxford English Dictionary. It is defined as “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone and shared via social media.” So taking selfies is normal or some mental disorder? Well, the research says it is a psychological disorder named Selfitis.

The term Selfitis founded in 2014. While it just started with fun pictures meant to share social media, Later is turned into an addiction in youth. The psychiatrists have taken the selfie behaviour seriously and also specified the condition as a specific psychological complex.

Moreover, a study on 400 college students revealed that more about the disorder. The two lead researchers and psychiatrists,  claim that people who keep feeling the need of clicking selfies and posting it on online; going through mental condition and want the professional help.

The students who get surveyed were from two colleges in India. Meanwhile, India has the highest Facebook users and surprisingly India witnesses most selfie death such as 76 deaths from 127 worldwide .

Meanwhile, people who suffer from such mental condition have reduced self-confidence, and they try to fit in with the people they are surrounded by, some symptoms of another potentially addictive behaviour can also be displayed, a researcher said.

Furthermore, more study is required to understand the mental condition more clearly, What causes the development of the addiction? And what can be the solution to this state is yet to be discovered.
The Selfitis mental conditions are differentiated in three levels of selfies: borderline, acute and chronic. In Borderline cases, people take selfies at least three times a day but do not post them on social media. In Acute cases, people post the selfies online. Whereas in the Chronic stage, people feel an urge to take photos of one’s self and posting them more than six times a day.

In the study, 34 % of students came out as Borderline Selfitis, 40.5 % Acute Selfitis and 25.5 %  students were Chronic Selfitis. Around 57.5 percent Males tend to be selfie addict whereas 42.5 percent females are selfie-obsessed, according to the research. Furthermore, students who were aged between 16-20 were more sensitive to this mental disorder. Around 25 percent students shared at least three images per day on social media, and above 9 percent students took eight selfies per day.

The research results have stunned us. In the surroundings of the internet and social media world, the counselling sessions among the youth and adolescents are need of hour.
