Social Jetlag during week-ends is bad for the Heart

HEART disease symptoms - which include chest pain and sweating - may be triggered by social jet lag, according to a new study.

Social jet lag is when you go to bed and wake up late on the weekends than during the week, often due to social commitments.

However, delaying your sleep schedule on Saturday and Sunday can harm your health, a new study has found.

Research  found that it was associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Indeed, for each hour of social jet lag there was an 11 per cent raised likelihood of suffering.

They also connected it to a worse mood, increased sleepiness and fatigue, as well as poorer overall health.

These are all independent of how long someone slept for and insomnia symptoms.

The lead study author  said: “These results indicate that sleep regularity, beyond sleep duration alone, plays a significant role in our health.

“This suggests that a regular sleep schedule may be an effective, relatively simple, and inexpensive preventative treatment for heart disease as well as many other health problems."

The study authors believe that social jet lag is an important circadian marker for health outcomes.

They studied 984 adults between the ages of 22 and 60.

Doctor recommends adults should sleep seven or more hours per night on a regular basis to stay in the best health.

Previous research has found a link between sleep and type 2 diabetes.

This is because not getting enough sleep can have a detrimental effect on blood glucose levels.

Aside from getting to bed later due to socialising, if you’ve been drinking too, this can affect your sleep further.

According to the Sleep Foundation, while alcohol may make you fall asleep more quickly, it leads to poorer quality sleep.

The same body also recommends sticking to the same sleep schedule, even at the weekend.

They also suggest avoiding daytime naps, exercising and having a bedtime ritual to help promote better sleep.
