Stem cells found in the eye can restore vision

Researchers have discovered stem cells in the eye which have been found effective in restoring vision, according to a recent study conducted by the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, U.S. School of Medicine and the city-based leading eye institute.

The researchers state that these stem cells would prove effective in restoring the lost eye-sight in millions of people across the globe in the future. It will work as a probable option to corneal transplantation, needed in patients who have lost their eye-sight post an infection or because of an injury to the cornea.

According to Dr Sayan Basu, employed as a Consultant Corneal Surgeon at LV Prasad Eye Institute, the stromal cells were found in the area between the black and white portions of the eyeball known as the limbus. When these cells are applied to injured corneas, the corneas healed in a span of four weeks of treatment.

The treatment was tested by Basu, together with James L Funderburgh, employed as a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, US, on a trial model of human eyes with corneal damaging.

Stem cells are cells that are capable of renewing themselves. They are also capable of distinguishing themselves into specialized cells to carry out specific functions based on the environment they are grown in.

The new study was published today in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
