Poem that cleanses air of pollution created in UK
Now a poem that cleanses air of pollution- sounds like science fiction,
but it's real and happening! Researchers from the UK have successfully
created the world's first air cleansing poem.
The poem is printed on a material and can eradicate air pollution caused by 20 cars per day.
The 10m x 20m piece of material is developed by the researchers from University of Sheffield. The material can remove harmful nitrogen oxide from the atmosphere by soaking it up.
The poem entitled 'In Praise of Air', which is printed on a material, is created by noted poet Simon Armitage, professor of poetry at the University and Tony Ryan, pro-vice chancellor for science.
According to the researchers, the technology is cheap and could be applied to billboards and advertisements alongside congested roads to reduce air pollution.
The material is coated with microscopic pollution-eating particles of titanium dioxide which make use of sunlight and oxygen to react with nitrogen oxide pollutants and purify the air.
“ This is a fun collaboration between science and the arts to highlight a very serious issue of poor air quality in our towns and cities. The science behind this is an additive which delivers a real environmental benefit that could actually help cut disease and save lives,” said professor Ryan, who came up with the idea of using treated materials to cleanse the air.
The poem will be on display at the Alfred Denny Building of the University at Western Bank for a year.
