SWEET POTATOES GOOD FOR HEALTH

Sweet potatoes aren’t just delicious–they’re good for you, too. In fact, they’re so good for you that almost everyone should incorporate them into their diet. There are three main reasons that these orange tubers (that’s what all potatoes are called) are so healthy. And these reasons can benefit everyone’s overall health.
  • They contain antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent or delay cell damage, and can strengthen your body’s own ability to fight off infection.

  • They contain anti-inflammatory nutrients. Anything that is anti-inflammatory prevents or reduces inflammation in your body. Chronic or “out of control” inflammation leads to poor health. People with arthritis and many autoimmune diseases benefit greatly from the anti-inflammatory nutrients in sweet potatoes.

  • They contain blood sugar regulating nutrients. Some people’s bodies cycle between blood sugar levels that are either too high or too low. This lack of stabilization is hard on the body.
There are ways to enjoy sweet potatoes besides simply boiling or baking them, too–although there’s nothing quite like a hot baked sweet potato with a little butter on it. Sweet potatoes make the most delicious French fries. Simply cut the potato as you would a regular one and deep-fry in oil. For an even healthier means of cooking them, lightly spritz your cut sweet potatoes with cooking spray or oil and bake them in the oven.
Sweet potato casserole is a delicacy on many people’s tables at Thanksgiving. The sweetness and richness of this tasty dish makes it a holiday favorite. Simply bake or boil and mash your potatoes. Mix in butter and a little brown sugar and cinnamon to taste. Pour the mixture into a greased casserole dish or 9 x 13 inch pan. Top with mini or regular sized marshmallows and place under a broiler just until the marshmallows turn brown and toasty.
Make sure to add sweet potatoes to your grocery shopping list and try them one or more of these delicious ways.
