The “Cortisol Cocktail” Isn’t Just Delicious – It Also Works

It’s not as though we need data to confirm that we’re stressed, but there are, nonetheless, countless studies and polls doing just that. Case in point: the most recent study which revealed that more than 30 per cent of people feel close to burnout as a result of work stress.

And so, it makes sense that social media is brimming with stress-busting remedies (these calming recipes being just one example). And while some of them fall squarely into the realm of old wives’ tales, others might just be legit. The most popular one right now? A viral drink recipe that claims to lower cortisol, restore energy, relieve tension and balance hormones. The name – the “cortisol cocktail” – is catchy, but could it actually work?

What is cortisol?

First things first: cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. This ability to produce cortisol is important, as it plays a key role in regulating the metabolism, inflammation and blood sugar levels, as well as having a direct influence on circadian rhythms. It’s essential for the human body to survive, but, despite the crucial benefits, there is such a thing as too much cortisol. A consistently high level prevents your body from regaining homeostasis. Instead, you live in a place of constant stress. Things like a lack of sleep or a poor diet can make things even worse.

Why the cortisol cocktail works

Each of the ingredients in the cortisol cocktail is carefully chosen for its health-supporting benefits: salt, magnesium, orange and lemon. Alone they are great, but combined? Well, that explains why the drink has gone viral. The combo of sodium, potassium and sugars represent a perfect boost for the body. The presence of coconut water promotes hydration, as well as giving the drink a delicate and pleasant flavour to boot.
