With these tips, your cold will be over before you know it
A runny nose, a sore throat, watery eyes, coughing and sneezing: these are all symptoms of a cold. A cold is often the result of an inflammation of the mucous membranes in your nose, sinuses and throat. These issues are usually caused by viruses. When your immune system is weakened, like during cold, dark winter days, you’ve got yourself a cold before you know it.
Luckily, doctors have devised a list of things to do to get rid of your cold symptoms within 24 hours.
1. Shower
It’s so annoying to wake up in the morning with a stuffy nose. A good way to start your day is by taking a hot shower. The steam from the hot shower will help make breathing a lot more pleasant for you again.
2. Breakfast
After your morning shower, it’s time for breakfast. Before you start preparing your usual breakfast of, for example, yoghurt with muesli and a hot cup of coffee, try taking some elderberry syrup first. This syrup gives your immune system a big boost and it combats viruses in your body. Doctors recommend taking two teaspoons of elderberry syrup three times a day. After taking the elderberry syrup, have a breakfast of food that really fills you up, like eggs, and have tea instead of coffee. Eggs combat infections in your body because of the amino acid they contain, and tea has a soothing effect, especially if you add some honey.
3. Lunch
A little later in the day, it’s time for lunch. If you’re really having a bad cold, you might not feel like eating a heavy lunch. A good option would be to have a mug of warm chicken soup, bananas or something with chickpeas. These foods are light but contain good, soluble fibres, proteins and potassium.
4. Exercise
This is a question that often arises: is it smart to exercise when you’re coming down with something? Oftentimes, you’re feeling too tired for it anyway. Yet going for a walk or doing some light training can help you get rid of your cold quicker. Not only will you feel more energised if you go out for a little bit, but it’ll also cause you to breathe more deeply. And that means: bye bye, stuffy nose!
5. Nasal spray
They’re here for a reason: nasal sprays. By using a nasal spray or saline solution you’ll be able to breathe much more easily. Don’t forget to not only use the spray during the day but also, or especially, before you go to bed. This way you’ll sleep much better. And sleep and rest is the most important thing when you’re feeling a little under the weather! Plus, you’ll benefit from this in the morning too, since there will be less mucous in your sinuses.
6. Hydration
Lastly, it’s very important to drink enough during the day. By staying properly hydrated, you’ll prevent the risk of becoming dehydrated. It’ll also make the slime and mucous in your throat and nose go away sooner. If you follow all of these six tips, there’s a good chance your cold will be gone after a single day!
