Renowned German Rheumatologist gave an important interview in Indian media
Last year Karl Kirschmeier came to India where he got an opportunity to
understand the experiences of Indian doctors. They were astonished by
what they saw here. Karl Kirschmaier believes that the science of
rheumatology in our country is stuck at the level of the last century.
After holding several high-profile conferences in Germany, Dr Karl
Kirschmaier agreed to give an interview to the Indian media. What did
the eminent doctor find bad about India's treatment and why does he say
that India's joint pain patients will never recover?
- While answering questions from German journalists you said that
you were shocked to see what was happening in India. Can you tell
more about this?
- - See, first of all let me tell that I have no problem with the
country of India, Indian culture or its people. But let me say that the
condition of health services in your country is really very bad. It's
going back at least 20, and maybe 30 years. At least this is the case
when it comes to treating diseases of the joints and the musculoskeletal
system. We can say that Rheumatology as a science does not exist in
India.
Let us see which medicines Indian doctors prescribe for treatment -
Viprosal, Dolgit, Voltaren/Fastum Gel, Diclofenac, Teraflex, Nurofen and
other similar medicines.
But these drugs do not heal joints and cartilage, they only relieve
symptoms - meaning they just reduce pain, swelling, etc. Now just think
about what is happening inside the body. When we take any medicine, or
apply an anesthetic gel, it is injected to us, then the pain goes away.
But as soon as the effect of the medicine wears off, the pain
immediately returns.
Pain is a very important signal for our body which points towards joint
