ICMR study claims people belonging to THIS category have relatively HIGHER protection against COVID-19 Delta variant
The COVID-19 Delta variant which was first identified in India have been found in 96 countries the World Health Organisation (WHO) informed as per an ANI report on July 1, 2021. According to a study, breakthrough cases and COVID-19 recovered patients with one or two doses of vaccine have relatively higher protection against the Delta variant in comparison to those who have received either one or two doses of Covishield.
According to an ANI report on July 5, 2021, an ICMR study on 'Neutralisation of Delta variant with sera of Covishield vaccines and COVID-19 recovered vaccinated individuals' reveals that prior vaccination results in less severe disease. This proves that both humoral and cellular immune response play an important role in protection.
The ANI report states that in the ICMR study, the immune response in
the sera of Covishield vaccinated individuals belonging to certain
categories were evaluated. The categories are as follows:
1) One dose vaccinated
2) Two doses vaccinated
3) COVID-19 recovered plus one dose vaccinated
4) COVID-19 recovered plus two doses vaccinated
5) Breakthrough COVID-19 cases
The study stated that the high transmissibility associated with the Delta variant has led to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India that affected millions of people. The recent emergence of the B.1.617 lineage has also created a grave public health problem in the country. The lineage further mutated to generate sub-lineages, for instance, B.1.617.1 (Kappa), B.1.617.2 (Delta), B.1.617.3.
The ANI report informed that the findings of the study demonstrated that the breakthrough cases and the COVID-19 recovered individuals with one or two dose of vaccine had relatively higher protection against Delta variant.
At present, the COVID-19 cases across the country has been decreasing. As per the data released by the Union Ministry of Health, as on July 6, 2021, India registered 34,703 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours. 35.75 crore vaccines have been administered under the nationwide vaccination drive.
