Should women not take COVID-19 vaccine 5 days before and after menstrual cycle?

The Centre on Saturday dismissed as “fake” a widely-shared social media post that claimed women should not take COVID-19 vaccine five days before and after their menstrual cycle.

“Fake post circulating on social media claims that women should not take #COVID19Vaccine 5 days before and after their menstrual cycle. Don't fall for rumours!,” the Press Information Bureau said in a tweet.

“All people above 18 should get vaccinated after May 1. Registration starts on April 28 on cowin.gov.in,” the PIB said in a "Fact Check" alert.

The social media post said that women should not take the COVID-19 vaccine before and after five days of their periods as their “immunity is very less” during that time.

The central government earlier this week announced that everyone above 18 years of age will be eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19 from May 1. It also liberalised the vaccination drive to allow states, private hospitals and industrial establishments to procure the doses directly from manufacturers.

Registration for vaccination will begin on the CoWIN platform and Aarogya Setu app from April 28.

The first phase of the nationwide vaccination drive was launched on January 16, prioritising protection for healthcare workers and frontline workers.

The second phase was initiated from March 1 to vaccinate people above 45 years of age who account for more than 80 per cent COVID-19 mortality in the country.

Under the third phase of the national vaccination drive commencing next month, the vaccine manufacturers would supply 50 per cent of their monthly Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) released doses to the central government and would be free to supply the remaining 50 per cent doses to state governments and in the open market.
