Protein to increase your longevity

Here is what you need you need to know!

Protein is one of the most vital macronutrients that our body requires in a large amount to maintain its functions and carry out different activities of daily life. It is known as the building block of life as it helps to make new cells and repair damaged tissue and cells. Now, scientists have found another reason to include more protein-rich food in your diet. As per the latest research, eating a particular kind of protein can help to improve your longevity.

Protein and long life

As per a study published in the medical journal BMJ in 2020, eating more protein, particularly plant protein can help to add years into your life.

This is not the first time when researchers have outlined the importance of having protein. Studies carried out earlier also indicated that eating more plant protein can reduce the risk of developing heart disease and cancer, thereby increasing life expectancy.

Why plant protein?

To determine the best source of protein, the researchers thoroughly examined the previous studies. They evaluated 32 completed studies, carried out on 715,128 men and women over age 18. In the end, they reached this conclusion that eating more plant protein guarantees a longer and healthier life.

Plant protein may lower your risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. You will have to increase your daily plant protein intake by just 3 per cent and this will lower your early-mortality risk by 5 per cent.

The two sources of protein

In general, there are two sources of protein: Plant and animal. Plant-based sources of protein are called incomplete protein and animal-based sources of protein are called a complete protein. A complete source of protein contains all nine essential amino acids.

Chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, and seafood are a complete protein, while all plant-based food sources, except quinoa, buckwheat, and soy products are incomplete protein.

Plant-based food might not contain all kinds of amino acids required to make a complete protein, but it is good for health and increases your longevity. So, if you want to live longer, eat more plant-based food products.
