60 million people are suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome! Are you on the list?

Computer Vision Syndrome, also called digital eye strain does not just affect our eyesight but also compromises on our productivity. Almost of all us spend more than half of our day while looking at our laptop and phone screens, leading to computer vision syndrome.

What is computer vision syndrome?
Do you have blurry vision? Tired eyes? Strained neck? Frequent headaches? If you have all of these symptoms, you are probably suffering from computer vision syndrome.

Computer vision syndrome occurs when you look at your phone and computer for extended periods of time, due to which the muscles of your eyes have to work overtime. Just like any other muscle, if you constantly strain your eye muscles, they get over-strained and get weak over time.

The syndrome affects around 60 million people around the world. These days almost all types of jobs involve at least some time where you have to work on a screen. So, what can we do?

Research shows that changing just a few daily habits can reduce one's risk of computer vision syndrome and improve your eyesight.

Eat more greens

We have been hearing this since our childhood that eating green vegetables (vitamin A rich) can improve your eye health. The nutrients in green leafy vegetables, named lutein and zeaxanthin have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which protects our eyes.

Practice the 20-20 rule
One of the simplest solutions to avoid getting computer vision syndrome is to reduce the amount of time spent on screen. But unfortunately, that's not an option for most of us.

So, what you can do is when your eyes start feeling tired or strained by looking at the computer screen, take a break and look at an object that is far away. The rule is for every 20 minutes that you spend on screen, you have to look at a distance for 20 seconds. Doing this can help relax your eyes and prevent headaches.

Consider taking supplements

If you can't get enough green vegetables every day, you can take supplements. Aim for getting at least 20 - 25 mg of both lutein and zeaxanthin from your supplements or vegetables each day.
Limit your blue light exposure

Maybe you cannot cut down on your work time, you can try and limit the recreational time you spend on the screen. Doing so can protect your eyes from the short wavelength of energy coming off from your screen called blue light.

Wear reading glasses

Reading glasses relieve quite a bit of strain on our eyes. When you spend more than eight hours per day on the screen, it leads to eye fatigue and eye strain. Using reading glasses can block some of the light coming from the screen, which can reduce the amount of strain on eyes.

Try blue light glasses, contact lenses or screen overlays
To keep the light from reaching your eyes, try wearing blue contact lenses or invest in a blue light blocking glasses. You can also use screen overlays that prevent the blue light coming from your laptop screen.
