Protein is the most important component of our body. It is present in every cell and is the building block of the bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Almost 20 percent of our body is made up of protein and so it is necessary to maintain the daily intake of protein for staying healthy. Protein intake is equally crucial when trying to lose weight and build muscle.

Protein takes a lot of time to break down and keeps you fuller for a longer period of time, which prevents you from having unhealthy food items when you are watching your weight. Eating the right balance of protein comprising of all 20 types of amino acids can help you build muscles and recover the body faster after exercise. But the most debatable topic of all is, which is better : Animal or plant-based protein?

Amino acids
There are 20 different kinds of amino acids that combine to form proteins. Whenever we consume protein, it is broken into singular amino acids and then recombines to perform different functions of the body. So, it doesn't matter if you are getting your daily protein intake from plant or animal-based sources because all proteins are made of the same basic units.

Apart from high-protein content, animal based food items are packed with Vitamin B12, which is not found in plant-based food items.

However, plant-based food items contain phytonutrients and some antioxidants, which are absent in animal-based products. Animal products also contain saturated fat and higher levels of cholesterol than sources of plant protein.
Which is better for building muscle?
When you are trying to build muscles, it is important to maintain your level of protein intake. People trying to build muscle should consume the optimum amount of protein. This helps to repair and build up the muscles after a rigorous workout session.

Non-vegetarians should consume the right combination of both plant and animal-based food products. This will provide your body with all kinds of amino acids. Consume too much-processed meat can be harmful to your health. 

If you are a vegetarian then try to include different varieties of vegetables and fruits.

Daily protein intake Like fats and carbs, our body does not store excessive protein in the body. So it is important to consume protein in the right amount every day. According to the Institute of Medicine, adults need to consume about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. 

Exercise and protein intake
When you shed sweat in the gym it is necessary to increase your protein intake. A person involved in one hour of physical activity every day needs to consume 1.4 to 2 grams of proteins per kilogram of their body weight every day. The best time to consume protein is right before and after your workout session. This will help to improve your muscle recovery timing.
