Migraine and Chronic Kidney Disease

Migraines are severe, recurring, and painful headaches, which often accompany additional symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or seeing flashing lights or blind spots. Consequently, these symptoms generate several mental and physical problems. Numerous evidences have established that migraine is not a localized disease; it can lead to chronic hypertension and kidney disease. Moreover, headache is frequently seen in subjects with chronic kidney dosease (CKD) and earlier reports have shown that 48 % of people with hemodialysis complain of migraine, suggesting some link between migraine and CKD.

A recent research published  has assessed the relationship between Migraine and CKD. Authors, for the first time, demonstrated the link between migraine and subsequent CKD. According to their analysis, people with migraine were at 1.22 fold at higher risk of subsequent CKD compared to the people without migraine. In addition, the younger people with migraine had a higher risk of CKD compared to older people. Moreover, people who used medication to relieve symptoms were more likely to develop CKD. As migraine largely affects young and middle-aged adults, the early detection of CKD and prevention of CKD progression in their later life are important issues to handle.

The possible factors responsible for CKD in people with migraine include blood pressure fluctuation and overuse of medication to treat pain and symptoms. The one of underlying mechanisms is oxidative stress; the oxidative stress-relative pathway is recognized as a risk factor for both migraine and CKD.

In conclusion, there is a significant link between migraine and subsequent CKD. As patients suffering from migraine are at a higher risk of kidney diseases, therefore, aggressive management involving regular follow-up of kidney function and a CKD education program is required for these people.
